Exercise and fertility: can it really help?

Exercise and fertility; can one help the other? The short answer is yes. And a bit of no, but mostly yes.

Exercise can help fertility in a number of ways, the key one being reduction of body fat. Excess body fat can interfere with ovulation and so excess body fat can be a problem when someone is trying to conceive. So doing the right type of training, things like plyometrics, interval training and resistance training can really help you on your fertility journey.

However, one thing to be careful of is over training. Over training can release cortisol, a stress hormone and this can be unhelpful when trying to conceive. So finding the right balance of enough, but not too much training is key to supporting your fertility.

One other thing to remember is that everyone is different. If someone has endometriosis, exercise may help, as exercise tends to be anti inflammatory. However, for some women with endometriosis, exercise may make things worse and a more gentle approach such as yoga, walking or cycling may be more helpful for exercise and fertility.

If you have PCOS, HIIT training or resistance training may be best as it can help you if you are insulin resistant. Again, it is key to ensure your body fat is not too high and both these types of training can help with this.

The best thing to do is work with a personal trainer who understands the journey you are on. Make sure they understand how important it is to get the combination of type of exercise and amount of exercise right.
